Folic acid
Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12)
Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)

Other Functional Ingredients:

Folic acid - is a vitamin needed to make new cells in the body, including red blood cells, amino acid formation and energy production. It is a cofactor in iron absorption and is essential in DNA synthesis and cell division. Folate requirements are increased during times of rapid cell division such as fetal development.

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
- is a micronutrient required for a wide variety of cellular processes. It plays a key role in energy metabolism, and is required for the metabolism of fats, ketone bodies and carbohydrates and proteins. It also aids in red blood cell formation.

Cyanocobalamin
- is necessary for the synthesis and functions of blood cells, the maintenance of the nervous system, and growth and development in children. A shortage of this vitamin may manifest itself as cracks and sores at the corners of the mouth, eye disorders, inflammation of the mouth and tongue, and skin lesions. Deficiency can cause anaemia.

Malpighia Punicifolia fruit extract (Acerola or Barbados Cherry)
- is an excellent source of antioxidants. Ascorbic acid, phenolic acids, anthocyanins, flavonoids and other potent antioxidants have been identified in this fruit.

Prunus domestica fruit extract (Prune)
- have been traditionally used as a laxative, to reduce the risk of constipation and to alleviate the symptoms of constipation. Prunes contain large amounts of phenolic compounds (184 mg/100 g), mainly as neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acids, which may aid in the laxative action. Prunes have also been used to maintain a healthy digestive function and to nourish convalescents recovering from acute diseases. Phenolic compounds in prunes have also been found to inhibit human LDL oxidation in vitro, and thus might serve as preventive agents against chronic diseases, such as heart disease and cancer.

Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) - facilitates iron absorption by preventing the formation of insoluble and unabsorbable iron compounds and maintaining iron in the ferrous state which seems to be a requirement for the uptake of iron into the mucosal cells. Research showed that the addition of 20mg of ascorbic acid to a meal containing non-heme iron increased iron absorption by 39% compared to control. Vitamin C is an antioxidant required for building up healthy skin, tendons, blood vessels and the healing of wounds.

Copper (from Copper Gluconate)- helps in the absorption of iron from the intestinal tract and is required in vital body functions such as enzymatic reactions, connective tissue, bone formation and enables normal metabolic process in association with amino acids and vitamins among others.

Why is iron important?
According to the World Health Organization, iron deficiency is the most common and widespread nutritional disorder in the world. Iron is a component of a number of proteins involved in vital biochemical reactions in the body such as myoglobin, cytochromes and enzymes. Iron is required for haemoglobin formation, the protein in red blood cell that carries oxygen to body tissues for providing energy for daily life.

Research has shown that declining iron stores are responsible for numerous health concerns such as:
* Decreased fertility has been linked to low iron stores
* Iron Deficiency Anaemia
* Decreased immunity and hence increased frequency of infection
* Before and during pregnancy low iron can be responsible for improper placenta development and occurrences of pre-term & low birth weight babies.

Some of the symptoms of iron deficiency are:
* Fatigue, general lack of energy and breathlessness
* Decreased ability to concentrate
* Decreased endurance during exercise
* Brittle hair and nails
* Decreased immune function, which increases susceptibility to infection
* Decreased appetite
* Feeling faint
* Cold hands and feet Iron deficiency (pre-anaemia) and anaemia have also been linked to
PMS, depression, decreased fertility and complications in pregnancy.

Who can benefit from supplementing with iron?
* Toddlers & school-aged children, iron deficiency can cause poor learning, memory and behavioral problems as well as developmental delay
* From the ages of around 15 to 55, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy & lactation increase the need for iron.
* Athletes and those who exercise regularly lose iron through sweat & the digestive tract, putting them at risk for deficiency and decreased endurance.
* Vegetarians are at higher risk of developing iron deficiency and so are those who eat little red meat

Why are iron supplements frequently associated with constipation?

Studies have shown that iron can slow down the digestive system, which in turn can contribute to slowing of normal bowel movement. This may be because iron is a metal in its basic form which carries a charge that is magnetic or electric, affecting muscles and nerves in the bowel that may cause constipation.
Better absorption of iron means very little unabsorbed iron enters into the intestinal tract and therefore constipation is less likely to occur. Ferrous gluconate is also less likely to cause intestinal side effects like ferrous sulphate which is known to produce constipation, nausea and bloating.

Feel Great's Non-constipating formula:
* Prunus domestica fruit (Prune)
Prunes are well-known for their laxative effects, having traditionally been used in laxative confections, either dried or stewed in water to prevent constipation and to alleviate its symptoms. The pulp of the prune has been used in domestic medicine as well as by the medical profession for its laxative properties.
The laxative action could be explained by their high sorbitol content and large amount of phenolic compounds (mainly as neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acids) which may aid in the laxative action. Sorbitol works by drawing water into the large intestine thereby stimulating bowel movements.

* Fast absorbing formula
Feel Great Liquid Iron contains the mineral iron in the form of ferrous gluconate. Oral ferrous gluconate in liquid form has been found to be more effective than other solid or liquid formulations containing elementary iron. It has been shown that preparations containing ferrous salts (+2) are more easily absorbed than those containing ferric salts (+3) since the former can be immediately absorbed by the duodenal mucosa.
Liquid formulation is generally absorbed faster than solid form. Vitamin C also helps faster absorption

Warnings:
Not for the treatment of iron deficiency conditions. Drink plenty of water. If symptoms persist consult your healthcare practitioner. Vitamin supplements should not replace a balanced diet. Refrigerate after opening. Use within 3 months of opening. Contains sodium benzoate.
